Billionaire Ackman supports rebel Harvard board candidates

Billionaire Bill Ackman is throwing his considerable influence behind a slate of four outsider candidates vying to join Harvard University’s board of overseers. Ackman, a Harvard graduate, is using a page out of the playbook that made him successful on Wall Street by nominating directors to join the boards of companies he is trying to transform. The dissident candidates, all U.S. military veterans, have pledged to “restore leadership excellence to Harvard,” uphold free speech, protect all students, and “remedy operational and endowment mismanagement.” Ackman has pledged his support for these candidates, who are running under the slate called Renew Harvard. The move by Ackman comes amid a firestorm of controversy at Harvard, and the election will take place this spring. The Harvard Corporation, the university’s top board, has come under fire for its handling of recent scandals, and additional Harvard graduates are also running for the board of overseers.
